A Zoom online conference that will cover Global African and British African history, framed around the British and international histories of Claudia Jones. Presented by academic and community historians, with a plenary for audience engagement.

The aim of the conference is to have papers that improve or expand the knowledge of the subject, mainly by highlighting the little known aspects of that history, or challenging the received wisdom.

This event marks the 58th anniversary of the passing of Claudia Jones, who died in London on Dec. 25 1964.

In June, as part of marking JA @ 50 and Marcus Garvey @ 100, we run Garvey + Rasta + Music = Better Communities, a panel-less reasoning session led  by BBM/BMC founder Kwaku on the influence of Garveyism upon Rastafarism, music, particularly roots reggae, and the positive outcome among musical and faith communities. It was also a space for the audience, be they Rasta, baldhead, Garveyite, pan-Africanist, artist, etc, to give their personal testimony. Blessed Barak had his drums!
It was a good session, and whilst many said they had learnt much, especially about Marcus Garvey. The only problem was that there was just not enough time! 

Hence Punch And Juicy Liquid Foods, a health drink business based near Willesden Library has opened its doors to make sure that there’s a Garvey + Rasta + Music Pt. 2, with more time for discussion, plus a bit of Garvey and Rasta-inspired music! Friday July 27, 6.15pm-9.30pm. It is free, but you would be expected to support the business by at least buying a cup of juice! Also, you are welcome to bring your drums for a drum circle!

On Thursday August 2, 4-6pm, Kwaku’s businessofmusic on Playvybz.com show will focus on Garvey, Rasta and Africa inspired roots reggae music to set the mood for Friday Aug. 3, 6.15pm-9.30pm the Africa: Reggae Sessions, which will consisis of a replay of ‘The Representation Of Marcus Garvey In Reggae Music’ presentation, followed by a session of roots reggae music focused on Africa, interspersed with mini discussions on Africa and Marcus Garvey.

What: Is ‘African’ or ‘Black’ the most appropriate term to describe us as a people?
Not a TAOBQ event, however TAOBQ co-ordinator Kwaku will be one of the debaters, and you know what side he'll be arguing for! 

The Diaspora Debating Association (DDA) invites all to live, informative, exciting and stimulating debating challenges, where two teams debate over a range of subjects in the presence of an audience.

African, Not Black History: Arguments for “African”

What: Institute of Commonwealth Studies, in conjunction with the Black & Asian Studies Association, present Black and Asian Britain seminars: African, Not Black History: Arguments for “African”

“Black” in Britain used to be a “political colour of alliances”, but now whom does it represent? Should we not use “African”? Kwaku, a history consultant and community activist, will focus on the issue of African identity. Presentation is preceded by the screening of the short-ish version of ‘The African Or Black Question’ guerilla documentary and ends with a Q&A.

Kwaku, co-ordinator of The African Or Black Question (TAOBQ) campaign, is the founder of BritishBlackMusic.com/Black Music Congress, which highlights black music with a British bias, music industry issues and education, and offers a forum for debating and networking; and a pathway to music industry education.

What: TAOBQ (The African Or Black Question) follows up on the 'Your Are African' discussion in January 2012 with 'What Does It Mean To Be A Global African?' A free presentation followed by workshops exploring issues around African values, perspective, etc.
It's an opportunity to input your views, and to catch a bit of 'The African Or Black Question' guerilla documentary. The event's led by TAOBQ co-ordinator Kwaku, hosted by Cllr Martin Seaton, plus experienced workshop facilitators.

*UK-based music industry and history consultant Kwaku will lead a Powerpoint-assisted presentation on the life of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (SC-T), one of Britain’s favourite composers of the early 20th century, and introduce some of his works, including ‘Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast’, which at one time vied with ‘Messiah’ and ‘Elijah’ as one of Britain’s most popular choral composition. 
SC-T, born of Sierra Leonean/English parentage, was feted internationally. He made three successful tours in the US, where he became the first African to conduct an all European orchestra and was invited to meet President Theodore Roosevelt in the White House. SC-T was proud of his African roots, and tried incorporating African themes within classical music. He was a member of the African Association, which organised the 1990 Pan-African Conference in London, where SC-T met WEB Du Bois, who had an influence on the composer. The dire circumstances of  SC-T’s estate partly led to the formation in 1914 of Britain’s Performing Right Society (PRS), which collects royalties for composers and music publishers.

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session during which SC-T’s life as an African living in England at the turn of the 20th century, a pan-Africanist, and his relationship with Du Bois, will be explored.  The event will be introduced by WEB Du Bois Memorial Centre acting executive director Mr BS Ato Keelson, and the Q&A preceded by an introduction by SC-T fan H.E. Mr KB Asante.

We aim to squeeze in the tail end an informal screening of the TAOBQ documentary
